Chinese-American fashion designer Derek Lam’s interest in the fashion world grew out of a childhood surrounded by garments. An alumnus of Parsons School of Design, Lam founded his own company in 2002 after 12 years of extensive design experience at Michael Kors and retail brands throughout Asia. Since his 2003 debut, Lam has mastered precise silhouettes with soft, womanly leanings and a subtle seventies homage. Each fall and spring Derek Lam collection is luxurious, yet wearable, feminine, but not fussy, with a refined-yet-sensual aesthetic. Lam won Best Accessories in 2007’s prestigious CFDA competition.
“I am interested in what it means to live a contemporary life,” says Lam. “I always consider what will work for women at this moment, and to me this moment is about luxury without formality.” – Derek Lam
Lam’s style, in his own words, is “A reinvention of American codes – classic round shapes from the 1970s re-interpreted for today in modern materials – exaggerated takes on classic silhouettes like round and wayfarer shapes – mixes of classic tortoise and bone with accents of gold.”
